Aqara's U100 smart lock is one of our favorite adaptable lock replacements, a sturdy smart lock with excellent compatibility options, like working with Matter and Apple HomeKit. But not everyone wants a full deadbolt replacement, which is why Aqara now offers the U200 as well, an adaptable, battery-powered smart lock that can fit on the average U.S. home deadbolt.
These retrofits can get pretty bulky -- August's earlier models are one of the most infamous examples before the company slimmed down later generations -- but the U200 lock may be the most compact we've seen. The outdoor keypad offers a plethora of unlock options for its size, including logged fingerprints, Apple Home keys, passwords, an app and even Aqara's new NFC tags (not included). Add an Aqara hub and even more Matter features and unlocking options become available, which is nice for those looking for further upgrades.

The Aqara app is also packed with customization options that apply to the U200 just as it did to older models. You can set a variety of autolocks, switch to a quiet unlock mode to avoid disturbances or just get reminders if you left the door unlocked accidentally. And since it's a retrofit, any homeowner with a standard door can install it as a quick DIY project.
We like full deadbolt replacements a little more than retrofits because it's a full upgrade for your door, but we also know that's a headache for a lot of owners or a step too far for renters looking for compliant security. The U200 is an alternative answer that retains Aqara's wealth of unlocking options and is a bit more affordable, too.
