Everything Motorola Announced: Razr Ultra, Razr Plus, Moto AI and More
Motorola's 2025 Razr lineup has been unveiled and includes a new Razr Ultra model that has a wooden back.
The Razr (2025), Razr Plus (2025) and new Razr Ultra unfolded.
On Thursday, Motorola updated its line of foldable phones for 2025: The Razr (2025), the Razr Plus (2025) and the all new Razr Ultra. This expands Motorola's line up from two versions of the Razr flip phone to three. And it shows how the company has found success by offering multiple versions of the Razr at different prices. Motorola is the only phone maker doing this while other companies have just one version like Samsung with its Galaxy Z Flip 6.
All three Razrs share a lot in common. They sport a titanium-reinforced hinge which should add 35% more folds over its lifetime. The phones sport larger batteries compared to last year's lineup. The new Razr has a 4,500mAh battery, the Razr Plus has a 4,000mAh battery and the Razr Ultra has a 4,700mAh battery. The Razr Ultra and Razr Plus have a 4-inch cover screen while the regular Razr sticks with the same 3.6-inch cover display from last year. All three phones have an IP48 rating and are some of the only foldables to offer some level of dust resistance even if it is just for particles larger than 1 millimeter and larger. The Galaxy Z Flip 6 also has an IP48 rating.
The Motorola Razr lineup is available to preorder starting May 7 ahead of a May 15 release date.

Moto Buds Loop with Swarovski crystals
The Moto Buds Loop include Swarovski crystals and were made in collaboration with Bose.
Motorola's fashion-forward ambitions didn't stop at just the Pantone-colored Razr line. The company also unveiled the Moto Buds Loop open-style earbuds, which include Swarovski crystals along with a Sound by Bose badge. Pricing and availability weren't announced yet, but the earbuds look like small earrings and hook across the ear. Motorola says that the open style lets in ambient noise (which can be good for staying alert in public places). The buds have a dual-microphone system and AI for voice calls and reducing background noise.Â
Moto AI gets connected
Moto AI is a mix of Motorola's tolls as well as AI integrations from the likes of Meta, Microsoft, Google and others.
Moto AI debuted last year on the 2024 Razr and Razr Plus. Motorola has AI partnerships with Perplexity, Meta, Microsoft and Google which significantly upgrades Moto AI in 2025. Moto AI features can be activated with a dedicated button or by looking and speaking directly at the phone.
Motorola says that Moto AI, along with integrated services like Perplexity, Copilot and Gemin, will complement each other. For instance, Perplexity can help with research-based tasks like vacation planning and will partly power Moto AI's Next Move feature that offers suggestions based on what's happening on your screen. Llama AI can summarize notifications for Moto's Catch Me Up. Moto's Pay Attention and Remember This are meant to help organize notes, audio transcriptions, contextual photos and screenshots. Other general queries can be fielded by either Copilot or Gemini.
Motorola's own AI will also pitch in for a variety of photography enhancement features. These include Signature Style for customizing the look of your photos as well as a Group Shot feature that can merge multiple photos together to ensure one where no one is blinking.

Hands on with the Motorola Razr Ultra
The Razr Ultra is the newest member of Motorola's foldable phone line.
Motorola's hoping that good things can come in threes for its newly announced Razr 2025 line. Specifically, there are three Razr models, with a $1,300 Ultra edition debuting alongside updated versions of the base $700 Razr and the $1,000 Razr Plus.
I spent a little time with the new Motorola Razr phones, and it was hard to notice their differences side by side. The design tweaks and spec changes between the three are slight. I found it easy to mix up the Plus and Ultra models when they're folded shut, as they both have a 4-inch cover screen. The base Razr uses a 3.6-inch cover display adorned with a colorful bezel. Unfolded, all three phones look tall because each has an interior screen with a narrow aspect ratio compared to a regular smartphone. The Ultra folds out to an expansive 7-inch display, while the Razr and Razr Plus have slightly smaller 6.9-inch screens.Â

A Motorola in many colors
Here's a quartet of tented Motorola Razr (2024) phones in a variety of colors.
Sporting a foldable phone is already making a statement -- but possibly leaked promotional photos for the Motorola Razr indicate that the 2025 model will have some exotic color options.
You might be able to choose between Pantone Gibraltar Sea (a steely blue), Pantone Lightest Sky (a pearly white) and Spring Bud (a lime green) for the Razr 2025. If those options seem boring, it's rumored you'll be able to get a carbon fiber pattern or a wooden finish for the phone that'll make it really stand out.
Flip phones need better cameras
The Motorola Razr and other clamshell flip phones, such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6, are ideal for photography. You can hold the Razr like a camcorder and its folding nature allows it to act as its own tripod. Selfie lovers can take better-looking self-shots using the main camera and the outer screen.Â
It's frustrating, then, that these phones are typically equipped with subpar camera systems that don't match up to those on their flagship candybar-style equivalents. Sure, I've taken some decent shots on Samsung's Z Flip line -- as well as its book-folding Z Fold series -- but it's always a huge step down from what you could achieve with the S25 range.Â
The cameras Motorola has put into its recent Razr line are fine for everyday snaps, but if you really want a powerful camera in your pocket at all times, you'll be better off looking elsewhere. I'll be keen to see whether the company follows this strategy with the latest model or whether it finally slams in a truly capable camera setup into its new flip phone.
Flip phones are a portable alternative to today's big phones
Motorola's 2023 Razr proving just how hand-friendly it can be
For years I've maintained a guide to the best small phones that's become almost impossible to update as there are no good small phones anymore. Apple killed off its Mini line, the latest Pixel 9A has ballooned to 6.3 inches in size and today's flagships, like the Galaxy S25 Ultra, come in at pocket-ruining 6.9 inches. But foldable flip phones may offer an alternative.Â
Sure, the 6.9-inch inner screen on the 2024's Razr Plus qualifies as enormous and will require someone with gargantuan thumbs to comfortably type one-handed. But by folding in half into a neat square, it becomes much more pocketable. And its 4-inch outer screen still provides all the information you need.Â
Is it the perfect solution to our lack of smaller phones? No. But it does mean you can have a phone that's more likely to fit into your jacket pocket, your jeans or a small bag. If you've struggled with the ever-expanding size of phones, maybe a flip phone is worth trying out.
The one thing I'd like to see on the next Motorola Razr Plus
The Motorola Razr Plus' cover screen is one of my favorite features on the phone.
Last year's Motorola Razr Plus made a lasting impression on me. It struck a great balance between its price and features while exuding a fun energy that most phones lack these days. But I'd like to see Motorola improve the Razr's performance. The 2024 Razr Plus had a Snapdragon 8S Gen 3 processor and 12GB of RAM. It was plenty fast and capable of powering AI features, whether I was scrolling social media or playing games. But it was still a step down from the more powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip. My guess is that Motorola wanted to protect the battery life and went with the 8S Gen 3 chip instead.
But in terms of longevity, I think a more powerful chip would better suit the Razr, especially as it gets new software and AI features. It's rumored that Motorola might launch a third Razr variant this year, called the Ultra, that will have a powerful chip. We'll have to wait and see.
Will the price be right?
A Motorola Razr (2024) on the left and a Motorola Razr Plus (2024) on the right.
One of the biggest advantages of the 2024 baseline Razr is its $700 price. That makes it more attainable than other foldables such as the $1,100 Galaxy Z Flip 6 -- meaning you'll have to compromise on some attributes like camera quality and AI capabilities. (The 2024 Razr Plus is $1,000, but that's still cheaper than the Z Flip 6.)
But with all the uncertainty caused by the Trump administration's latest tariffs, it's unclear whether Motorola will have to bump up prices on this year's phones. I certainly hope not, or at least not by much. Foldable smartphones are already a tough sell, since they can come across as gimmicky. Lowering the barrier to entry by having more budget-friendly pricing could entice people to give the unique design a shot. If there's a significant price hike, it could come at the expense of would-be interest.
Are more Razrs better for Motorola?
Here is a Motorola Razr Plus (2024) next to an original Motorola Razr flip phone form 2004.
Motorola is the only phone-maker with a low-cost and flagship version of its foldable clamshell phone: the $700 Razr and the $1,000 Razr Plus. Last year Motorola shipped 253% more Razrs than it did in 2023 according to a report from Counterpoint Research. Compare that growth against Motorola's biggest rival, Samsung, which had a 33% decline in shipments over the same period. Clearly Motorola can attract more customers by having multiple Razr options.
But things get more interesting when you learn where many of those new customers are coming from.
"When we talk about the Razr Plus, we're seeing that 25% of consumers are actually coming from iPhone devices," said Majo Martin, Motorola's North America marketing director.
By comparison, Martin told me that 20% of new Motorola Razr owners in 2023 switched over from an iPhone. She said that growth is driven by emotional response.
When I reviewed the Motorola Razr Plus (2024), I had trouble remembering the last time I'd used a phone that was as fun as the Razr. Motorola prioritizes the experience of using the Razr Plus over pretty much everything else, and there's a lot of value in that for people who want to have their phone be another way to express themselves and their personality versus a boring old gray rectangular slab with rounded corners.
A 4-inch cover screen meets, but doesn't exceed, last year's Motorola Razr Plus
The Quick View display on the Razr is officially the smallest screen I've ever played PUBG Mobile on.
When the Razr returned as a foldable phone in 2020, it had a 2.7-inch cover screen. Our very own Patrick Holland was able to struggle through a couple matches of PUBG Mobile on it, but it was a tough ask for Motorola fitting everything onto that petite display. By 2024, the Razr Plus model had a 4-inch cover screen.
Now, 2025's regular Razr model could be meeting that benchmark set by the 2024 Razr Plus and have a 4-inch cover screen, according to rumors. You won't be working with the same display real estate that you would with a non-foldable phone, but the next generation Razr cover screen should outperform competitors, like the Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip 6 and its 3.4-inch cover screen.
How Motorola can improve the Razr
The Motorola Razr (2024)
I really enjoyed reviewing the 2024 Razr last year, and am eager to see how Motorola upgrades the device. The cover screen became my favorite way to quickly send a text or check my notifications, and it convinced me that foldable smartphones can actually be quite practical (and not just gimmicky). But I do wish Motorola would nix that half-inch bezel at the top. I'm doubtful that'll happen, since the company will likely still entice you to pay more for the Razr Plus, but a girl can dream. Also, I hope Motorola does a better job formatting TikTok and Instagram content for the cover screen, so videos and photos aren't awkwardly cropped.Â
Another big perk would be extending support for software updates beyond the current three years. Samsung and Google offer seven years of OS and security updates on their devices, and it'd be great if Motorola took a page from their books.
