Magellan ToughCase for iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch (photos)

Magellan's ToughCase for iPhone may seem like protection overkill, but that may just be the best part of it.

Magellan ToughCase for iPhone, iPod Touch

Magellan's ToughCase for iPhone and iPod Touch is many devices in one. It's a waterproof and shockproof protective case; it's a battery extender; and it's an accuracy boosting GPS receiver.

Size comparison

Cramming all of that function into a case means that the ToughCase will add considerable bulk to the otherwise svelte iPhone 3G and iPod Touch.

Don't try cramming this iBrick into your skinny jeans!

Clamshell design

The ToughCase opens like a clamshell and protects the iPhone from the elements. An internal dock connector links the iPhone to the case's battery, GPS receiver, and USB and headphone jacks.

IPX7 waterproof

Locking shut with a pair of heavy plastic clamps, the ToughCase forms an waterproof seal that is IPX7-rated. This means that it can be submerged in up to 1 meter of water without doing harm to the phone within.

USB port

The ToughCase moves the iPhone's USB connection and headphone jacks to the sides of the device where they are safely protected by rubber seals. The mini USB port is used for charging the case's internal battery with the included charger. Rubber buttons for volume controls, the home key, and the screen lock are also provided.

Screen lock buttons

Because the iPhone's and iPod Touch's lock buttons are placed differently, the ToughCase features two rubber lock buttons that are labeled for the two devices.

Status lights

At the bottom of the device are a pair of buttons and six status lights. The first button calls up the battery charge state by lighting up the first four lights. Each light indicates 25 percent of a full charge.

The second button toggles among battery charging, charging with GPS, and system off, with one, two, or no lights indicating the chosen modes.

Monorail system

On the back, we see the Magellan's silver Monorail. This metal slot is where the ToughCase will connect to a variety of belt loops, handlebar mounts, and other mounting options.

Peek-a-boo

A small window over the iPhone's camera allows users to take pictures and video without fear of damaging their device.

Master power switch

Inside the case and behind the cradled iPhone is a master power switch.

iPod Touch sleeve

In order to facilitate the thinner iPod Touch, Magellan includes a sleeve for a snug connection. How they plan to deal with the new form factor of the iPhone 4 remains a mystery. Perhaps a ToughCase 4?
