2018 BMW X3 packs first-ever performance model

For the 2018 model year, BMW's thrown a host of updates at its smallish utility vehicle, both inside and out.

The base X3 xDrive30i comes with a 2.0-liter, turbocharged I4, good for 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. 

If that's not enough for you, BMW finally added an M Performance variant -- the X3 M40i. 

This one packs a 3.0-liter, turbocharged I6, with an output of 355 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. 

Both variants come standard with all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic.

While the overall length is about the same, the wheelbase is 2.2 inches longer, reducing overhangs and increasing interior space.

It'll be the first BMW crossover in the US to come with a factory-installed 2-inch trailer hitch, too.

BMW's latest vehicles, including this X3, will be capable of sending one another messages about upcoming hazards with car-to-car communications. 

There's also a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot capable of supporting up to 10 devices, and Apple CarPlay can be engaged wirelessly.

Pricing is not yet announced, but it will be revealed as we move closer to the 2018 X3's launch this November.
