2018 Volkswagen Atlas: Big, bold and just a bit boxy

Welcome to the hotly anticipated 2018 Volkswagen Atlas. The three-row crossover fills a much-needed space in the VW lineup.

While a 2.0-liter is available, we predict the 3.6-liter V6 with 276 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque will be more popular.

The Atlas has a length of 16 and a half feet, making it slightly bigger than the Honda Pilot and about the same length as the Ford Explorer.

Volkswagen's 4Motion all-wheel drive system is optional on all V6 models.

LED headlights and daytime running lights are standard across all trim lines.

The profile style crease has an unfortunate intersection with the gas-filler door.

Only available on the top-of-the-line SEL Premium is the Digital Cockpit. This customizable digital gauge cluster can put the navigation map front and center.

Drivers can choose what information to be displayed between the gauges and at the center of each gauge as well.

The interior of the Atlas is full of fine materials, save for the plastic-y looking wood trim on the dash.

Optional second-row captain's chairs take the seating down from seven adults to six.

There is nearly 97 cubic feet of cargo space behind the front row.
