2020 Ford Escape Hybrid: A greener small SUV

After not having one during its third-generation run, the new 2020 Ford Escape will launch with not just one but two hybrid offerings.   

Initially, a mild hybrid will be available that uses a 2.5-liter Atkinson Cycle four-cylinder engine and an 88-kilowatt electric motor. 

Together the hybrid drivetrain produces a net system output of 200 horsepower.  

The Escape Hybrid sends power to the wheels through a continuously variable transmission. 

Front-wheel-drive is standard on the 2020 Ford Escape Hybrid. All-wheel-drive is available as an option for an additional $1,500. 

Ford says it's targeting an EPA-estimated driving range of more than 550 miles for the Escape Hybrid with front-wheel drive.

Powering the electric motor is a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery pack that's a third of the size of the previous Escape Hybrids.

The smaller battery pack is placed beneath the floor under the rear seats to not take up precious cargo space. 

On the tech front, all 2020 Escape Hybrids come with a Sync 3 infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen capable of running Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Wi-Fi hotspot. 

The 2020 Ford Escape Hybrid starts at $28,255, not including $1,195 for destination.
