Acura keeps its model options simple. You can either get the car with our without the tech package. This being CNET Car Tech, we of course got the tech package, which includes GPS and a surround sound stereo system. Bluetooth cell phone integration comes on both versions.

Acura remains devoted to its design style, despite criticism in the automotive press. The grille in particular is distinct.

The MDX is motivated by a 3.7-liter aluminum block V-6, making 300 horsepower. Average fuel economy comes in around 18 mpg.

The chunky MDX has three rows of seating, fitting two in the front and back, and three in the middle.

The MDX uses Acura's super-handling all-wheel-drive system, called SH-AWD. Torque is generally biased toward the front wheels, but 50 percent is sent to the rear wheels as needed.

Although there is decent cargo space with the third row up, the rear seats can be folded down to create more space.

The interior of the MDX fits the mold of Acura's other cars. It doesn't overwhelm you with luxury, but the materials have a quality feel and the fit looks good.

Voice command controls are integrated into the steering wheel, a better arrangement than with Acura's sedans, where the buttons are attached to the sides of the wheel.

Blue rings around the gauges have become a signature Acura theme.

The MDX uses a five-speed automatic transmission with a manual mode, a drive train piece standard in many models from the company.

The instrument panel remains covered in buttons, one of our biggest complaints about Acura's interface.

Acura was the first company to include XM NavTraffic in its navigation system. Unfortunately, that navigation system hasn't been updated since.

XM satellite radio comes with the tech package, and is also the means by which traffic information is delivered.

The MDX gets the ELS surround sound system, which generally produces nice audio, but could use a little more power in the large MDX.

The speaker package includes these forward-facing tweeters mounted on the rear pillars.

The DVD entertainment system is mounted to the ceiling and includes jacks for external sources.
