2016 Scion iA zoom-zooms into the New York auto show (pictures)

Scion unveils the 2016 iA, its first ever sedan model, at the New York auto show.

The little sedan is powered by an even smaller 1.5-liter engine that outputs about 100 horsepower.

The front end design appears to be a sharpened evolution of what we've seen on the Prius C.

The iA's chassis and engine are based on the same underpinnings as the new Mazda2 compact.

As a result, much of the Scion's style is shared with Mazda's Kodo: Soul of Motion design language.

Scion promises that the iA will be a fun little economy car with excellent handling.

It's a bit odd that Scion is only just now getting around to selling a sedan.

One of the least expensive models in Scion's line up, the iA is expected to retail for about $16,000.

The compact will also be the most fuel efficient Scion model, boasting up to 42 highway MPG.

The iA will be available with either a manual transmission or a six-speed automatic that features a locking torque converter

The iA's design feels cohesive from some angles, but from others the front and rear feel stylistically disconnected.

The iA will come standard with a forward pre-collision alert with auto-braking, another first for the brand.

The compact's cabin seems well sorted and spacious.

Interior finish is on par with what we've seen in the Mazda2, but this feels like a $16,000 car.

Tech is also borrowed from Mazda, as indicated by the physical infotainment controller on the center console.

The move away from Scion's standard double-DIN infotainment will no doubt deter car audio enthusiasts.

Instrumentation is based around a large center gauge.
