Volvo XC40 strikes out in a new design direction

The XC40 comes out as Volvo's newest and smallest SUV. It follows the XC90 and XC60.

Many design elements comes from Volvo's other recent models, such as the XC90 and S90.

The grille shows separation from the headlight casings, unlike the XC90 and XC60.

The XC40 will be sold as the T5 and T4, designating engine size, although Volvo has not released specifications yet.

"Hammer of Thor" headlights were introduced first on the XC90, and have become a standard Volvo design treatment.

Where the XC40 really differs from its siblings is the wide rear pillar.

The XC40 has 8.3 inches of ground clearance, which should help it negotiate snowy driveways.

Large wheels give it an aggressive appearance.
